The Escuelita - our newest program

Magnolia Park Arts is reviving the Escuelita, a Hispanic community tradition dating back to the 1880s.

The result of responses to a 2021 community survey funded by the Hogg Foundation, the Escuelita engages local adolescents in a culturally relevant reading and arts enrichment program.

The pilot program will run on Saturday mornings throughout the summer of 2024. Participants will read about Mexican/Hispanic history and and create art together. By August, participants will be inspired, seeing themselves as agents in civic and economic development, allaying feelings of powerlessness amid fears of gentrification and a history of marginalization.

The culturally relevant arts enrichment curriculum has been developed in partnership with Dr. Desi Rios, social psychologist; and Dr. Jesse Esparza, author of Raza Schools; Milby High School La Raza; and Communities in Schools.
