La Escuelita - our newest program
Magnolia Park Arts is reviving the Escuelita, a Hispanic community tradition dating back to the 1880s.
The result of responses to a 2021 community survey funded by the Hogg Foundation, the Escuelita engages local adolescents in a culturally relevant reading and arts enrichment program.
The pilot program will run on Saturday mornings throughout the summer of 2024. Participants will read about Mexican/Hispanic history and create art together. By August, participants will be inspired, seeing themselves as agents in civic and economic development, allaying feelings of powerlessness amid fears of gentrification and a history of marginalization.
The Chicano arts enrichment curriculum has been developed in partnership with Dr. Desi Rios, social psychologist; and Dr. Jesse Esparza, author of Raza Schools; Milby High School La Raza; and Communities in Schools.
